Child Behavior Modification: Rules For Parents
When a parent is faced with his child’s behavior problems, he should firstly make an effort to identity the type of problem. This will help the parent to deal with the child more effectively and help them achieve child behavior modification. Behavioral problems in a child can be of different types.
For example, unruly behavior, tantrums, defiant behavior conduct disorder or even attention deficit disorder all of these can cause problems. While for attention deficit disorder and defiant behavior, it is advisable to take help of a professional, more often than not parents can handle their child’s behavioral problems themselves. After all behavior is learned at home!
But, more often than not, parents can themselves help modify their child’s behavior by following a few simple rules.
1. Draw limits for your child. This implies that as a parent you should make clear cut distinctions between the desired behavior and the undesirable behavior. As a parent one should inform the child about his/her limits.
2. Don’t make too many rules. While setting the limits or the do’s and don’ts for your child a parent should know that there should not be too many rules. This can actually retard the development of the child as it will kill his willingness to experiment and promote open thought.
3. Keep them flexible. Make sure that the rules you make for your child are flexible so that your child can enjoy space and you as a parent need to break your rules to accommodate your child’s wishes. This can actually develop a healthy bond between the child and the parent.
4. Never give in. As a parent one should be careful as to not to give in to their child’s unreasonable demands. This at a later stage can cause defiant disorder as the child would assume that showing tantrums would make parents gullible.
5. Always give a reason. Explain to your child why you will not accept or fulfill their demands. Instead of just saying that don’t do this as I told you so, give a reason. This will not only make the child understand but also trust you.
6. Do not shout or over react. Over-reacting to your child’s undesirable behavior will invariably make him or her stubborn. Instead give reason for your disapproval of the behavior. Find out different ways and means to correct your child’s behavior. Sometimes a stern look can be more effective than a shout.
7. Be firm. Parents should always keep in mind that they do not deviate from their statements. A ‘no’ should be a ‘no’ and should not turn into a yes at any circumstance. This will help in not only disciplining the child but also modifying faulty behaviors.
If parents are careful in making sure that they follow the rules above, they will most likely be able to achieve their goals of child behavior modification in a smooth manner, without having to shout or hit the child.

Nice blog and I like the way you've pointed out the importance steps in dealing with children behaviour.
A child's misbehavior start initially as part of the child's curiosity and see how far they can push it. This is a new experience for kids. However, if parents pave way everytime, this could lead to misleading behaviour. Eventually as a matter of time, the misbehaving pattern can begin to take a toll on the parents.
I would also like to share this article on "Misbehaving Child" that I believe will help other parents in dealing with Misbehaving child and also with Attention seeking behaviour.
