Activities For Kids: How To Help Your Child Find A Hobby
By Vipula Waghmare
Helping your child find a suitable hobby can go a long way in developing his personality and it is among the best gifts you can give to your child.
The Importance of a Suitable Hobby
Every child has creative potential and the ability to enjoy an activity that can bring them immense fulfillment. While studies and good grades continue to be the Holy Grail, they do not entirely replace a suitably de-stressing hobby.
Normally, if a child expresses a desire like joining a dance or drawing class, a conservative parent would admonish it to focus more on studies and set limits instead of encouraging the interest.
However, there has been a paradigm shift in this way of thinking of late. In this enlightened age, parents are waking up to the necessity of giving their kids the freedom to choose their own hobbies.
The Stress Factor
Why this stress on destressing? The reason is that our children are definitely under considerable stress there days. Actually, a simple and effective way out is so close at hand that we often do not see it – help the child find a hobby.
The ideal hobby gives your child a chance to express itself creatively, vent off excess energy and to develop a degree of expertise in a particular field. This, in turn, will boost the child’s self-esteem and will foster a spirit of independence.
A Hobby as a Means of Exploring the World
Do give your child time to explore various interests, and do all you can to enable it with the right equipment and information. If you find your child’s interest wavering, be indulgent and engage him in conversation – what caused the decrease in interest?
What new interest has replaced it, and why? Then provide support for the new line of interest. This would be a good time for you to step in and discourage Internet browsing as a hobby – with as firm a hand as required!
A good hobby should involve manual and intellectual skills. Outline the dangers of uncontrolled browsing and suggest alternative means of productive distraction:
• Challenge your child to solve a simple crossword in the newspaper
• Involve your child in a spot of gardening and assign him a particular plot to develop
• Buy a few good books and discuss them with your child at dinnertime
• Redirect an excessive interest in computers and Internet browsing to other activities
In helping your child find a suitable hobby, you may have to hold back so you can let your child learn and grow independently, too. The ideal role of a parent in this process is that of an enabler.
• Take her along to the golf course or tennis court
• Show him your stamp collection
• Visit the museum on a weekend and show him the ancient coins section
Observe closely what captivates your child’s imagination. Stimulate his intellect by teaching him chess and other adult games. Observing his behavior can help. Is s/he more of an indoors kid or an outdoors kid?
If you find it necessary to get your kid outdoors more often, offer to play a game of catch or Frisbee with her. This sets the stage for discovery and may well lead to a new and captivating outdoors hobby!
Reading as a Hobby
Inculcating reading habits at an early age can help your child gather knowledge in different areas. Books will not only be their source of knowledge, but also will be their best friend and guide.
Let Your Child Decide
Experts agree that it is a mistake to force one’s hobbies on one’s kids, or to follow the popular trend. The current trend for parents to enroll their kids into hobby classes is questionable if these classes are seen as the end rather than the means.
Hobby classes or groups do allow kids meet others of their age and this is certainly positive. So is the fact that they will be exposed to various hobby options. However, an ideal hobby can develop only from what a child really desires – what suits his interests and personality.
When your child finally finds a hobby he enjoys, you will certainly know by the smile in his eyes. Rest assured that your child will be thankful to you some day for giving him a chance to explore his interests.
