People who say that parenting is easy don’t know what they’re talking about. What is supposed to be a natural process, in reality can take its toll on the person trying to raise children. The first child, in particular, faces unique problems because the parent is still open to learning new child care tips.

The youngest child will most likely fair better because by this time the parent will be more confident in their skills and will be able to make value judgments about the best ways of handling different situations that might arise as the child is growing up.

If parents are successful in raising kids, they can look forward to having nurtured a well-adjusted child that makes them proud of all the effort that they put into the parenting process.

Four Tricky Issues That Parents Of Young Children Must Address

• Breastfeeding

Parents need to ensure that they are breastfeeding the children when appropriate. There is room for formulas if the baby cannot consume breast milk for any reason. However the first choice has to be the natural breast milk.

It contains active ingredients that help the growth of the baby and deal with their immunity requirements until their own system is strong enough. There are certain conditions such as HIV where any attempts to breastfeed the child will increase the risk of infection. Parents may be advised to avoid breastfeeding in such situations.

Breast milk is soon complemented by a diet progression that will gradually introduce solids and other foods of interest. Eventually the child will be able to have a full diet with all the trimmings if they can handle it. The parent has to approach this process with great thought and care.

• Finance

There are also other practical and financial requirements that the parent might need to examine in some detail. The problem with having a baby is that expenses can hit the roof and yet the support might be lacking. The parent is left to pick up slack by finding ways to economize.

The area of clothing is challenging because it requires parents to buy items that are soon going to be of no use as the baby grows. They might be passed down to other members of the extended family, but that represents a loss to the family budget. It also means that there is less money to spend on other things that are important for the family.

Parents need to teach their child about their own culture

• Discipline

As the baby grows the issues of discipline will come to the forefront. In the United Kingdom there has been an outcry about corporal punishment. Parents that come from more conservative cultures believe that this is a right and duty of the parent to ensure that the child does not get out of hand.

Other people believe that it borders on child abuse. The state has said that it will step in and punish anyone that smacks children with unreasonable force. Of course the devil is in the detail because no one can really define “unreasonable force” with certainty.

In any case, incidents of blatant abuse are likely to land a parent in prison. It is always preferable that parents look to establish a bond with the child that is based on respect and love. Discipline issues will be much easier to handle in this context.

It is important that the values and discipline in the child are instilled at a very early age. That means that when they become difficult teenagers they will already know the score and the type of behavior that is expected of them.

• Cultural Issues

Your child will also need to learn about the culture into which they are born. Immigrant families might face a struggle in reconciling their background to their future.

Moreover, the right-wing press seems to delight in every opportunity to make children of immigrant families feel unwelcome. That is why it is very important that children are given firm training in their culture and background so that they can face the world with confidence.
