Parenting Tips For Dads: How To Be A Better Father To Your Kids
By Gareth Williams
Being a day in the 21st century has never been a more fun – or confusing – role to fill. Now that mothers can have the opportunity to stay at home raising children or become equal breadwinners in the family, fathers are searching for new ways outside of traditional methods to be a great father.
Yet men today are still questioning what it is exactly to be a great modern day Dad. Should he be seen as the primary breadwinner and disciplinarian like a father was generations ago?
Should he be a more fun and approachable father? These kinds of questions are still around today as modern fathers raise their children.
However, no matter what you may feel towards these questions, every father can be a great dad to their children. Here are a few expert-proven tips for being the best dad to your kids ever!
Have A Sense Of Humor
Raising children will no doubt be one of the most unpredictable experiences you’ll encounter in your life; that’s why it’s important to have a sense of humor about situations that are out of your control.
For example, if your child accidentally drew on the walls or trekked mud into the house, let them know that what they did was wrong, but don’t work yourself up over it. After all, your child is just that – a child!
Show Your Child Love And Affection
Fathers can often feel uncomfortable showing their children love, praise and affection, especially if they were brought up in a more traditional household where the father was a more stern figure.
However, children need to feel love and affection from both parents, so make the effort to show your child that you love them each day. Praise your child whenever he or she does something right, and never miss the opportunity to tell your child that you love him or her.
Don’t Try To Be A Picture-Perfect Father
No father can claim that they’re the best dad in the world, except in the eyes of his children – but they’re a biased crowd! If you’re trying too hard to be the perfect father, ease up on yourself.
Chances are you’re already doing a terrific job, and your children won’t mind if you don’t see yourself as the perfect father – to them, you already are!
Be Silly With Your Children
Dads often get the fun opportunity to act like a big kid with their children, so take advantage of this! Play with your children on the playground, teach your kids to play sports or just gently roughhouse after dinner.
Work Together With Your Spouse Or Partner
Nothing can cause more discomfort in a household than parents who don’t work together in raising their children. Always talk to your wife or partner in regards to goals that you have in raising your children. Additionally, never undermine your partner in front of your children, as this will teach them to show your partner or spouse little respect.
By working together as a unit, you’ll not only run your household more smoothly; you’ll effectively teach your children how to have happy and healthy relationships well into adulthood.
Being a dad is one of the most rewarding experiences that any man can have in his life. Being a father to a beautiful child can be humbling, rewarding and terrifying all at the same time – but remember that there’s no such thing as the perfect father.
Just do the best you can, and remember to show your children love and affection; that’s the key to being a great father!
