How To Play Holi Safely: Natural Colours That Are Good For You
By Deepak Gupta
Holi is a passion for Indian people. They play Holi with a variety of colours. Whether you like to play Holi with dry colors or wet colours, you must not use colours that are made with harmful chemicals.
People use paint, ink, chalk powder, mica, to celebrate this festival. This is never recommended because these materials can damage the skin and eyes. If you don’t want anyone to put such harmful colours on your skin and hair, then you should use herbal or natural colours to play Holi.
You might think that buying herbal colours can be too costly. But you can use natural colours prepared at home with ingredients like roses, turmeric powder, henna powder, grapes. This article describes the process of doing just that.
Wet Herbal Colours For Holi
Amla for a Black Colour:
The black colour can be made using black grapes and Indian Gooseberry (also called Amla). To prepare wet color from grapes, extract the juice of black grapes and mix sufficient amount of water in it to remove the thickness. Your black colour is ready. This color will never harm anyone.
To prepare black colour from Indian Gooseberry, boil the dry Gooseberry in an iron vessel. Keep the vessel overnight with boiled Gooseberry. Next morning, filter the mixture to get the black herbal color.
Henna for a Green Colour:
To prepare green colour you need Henna (Mehndi) powder. Mix two tablespoons of Henna powder in one liter of water and mix it thoroughly. Your green herbal colour is ready to play safe Holi.
Red Sandal Wood for a Red Colour:
To prepare red herbal colour, you need red sandal wood powder. Take two tablespoons of red sandal wood powder in one liter of water and mix them thoroughly. Your red herbal color is ready.
Take a bunch of Red hibiscus flower and put them in water overnight. Next morning when you wake up and see the vessel having Red hibiscus flower and water, you will see that the color of water is changed to red. Now, take the flowers out and use the water to play Holi. Extract the juice of carrots and tomatoes, filter the juice, dilute the juice with plenty of water, and use it to play Holi with natural red color.
Dry Herbal Colours For Holi
Rose Petals for a Red Colour:
For this, you need petals of red roses. Depending on how much colour you want to prepare, collect rose petals. Dry them under direct sunlight. Once the petals are dried, grind them to make powder of them. Your red herbal colour is ready with natural fragrance of roses. Use this to play Holi with your loved ones.
Henna Powder (Mehndi) for a Green Colour:
Henna powder is available at almost every cosmetic shop in India. When Henna powder is mixed with water, it is used to make designs on the palm of the hand, but you can use it to play Holi as well.
Another way to prepare green herbal colour is collect leaves of spinach, mint, and coriander, wash them, and then dry them under sunlight. Once the leaves are dried, grind them to prepare green and dry herbal colour. Use this powder to play Holi.
Turmeric Powder and Gram Flour for a Yellow colour:
A mixture of turmeric powder, gram flour, and rose water is known to tighten facial skin. You can also use turmeric powder and gram flour to make a yellow herbal colour. Depending on how much colour you want to make, mix gram flour and turmeric powder in the ratio on 85:15 i.e. 85% Gram Flour and 15% turmeric powder.
These are the many different ways to prepare herbal Holi colours. These colours are 100% safe for your skin, eyes, and hair. The interesting fact about these colours is that they are good for your skin and will add more life to skin cells instead of damaging them like harmful chemical colours.
